Christmas is coming. Saw the weather forecast and it likely to snow in UK with the snow reaching Cambridge on Boxing Day (26th)! (Yippy!!!) Hope it snow, hope it snow....!!!

Going to work tomorrow (not sure what to do at work cos the clients are mostly already on leave, thus I think I might leave early..) and will only start work on 4th Jan 05! Long holiday.

As Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on weekends, 27th & 28th of Dec are public holiday in UK to make up for it and so is 3rd Jan for New Year Day. Thus only took unpaid leave for 3 days.

Christmas Day is a boring day for me in UK cos all the shops (even supermarket) are closed, so nowhere to go and is struck at home watching TV (not Simpson I hope!!). Come to think of it, the way Britain celebrates Christmas is just like how we celebrate Chinese New Year. Going home for reunion dinner, no shops are open, stocking up on food, etc.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the shopping after Boxing Day. Real bargain hunting. Hope I wouldn't spend too much... :)

Coat
Originally uploaded by abtmay.

Saw this coat on sale at Gap for 50 pounds last month and I didn't buy it cos it was too expensive. Went out shopping during lunch time today and saw it again at reduced price at 30 pounds!!! MUST GRAB!!!

Bought it knowing that it's too similar to the black coat I bought this year .... Think I just buy it for the thrill of buying!! (thank God for the 14 days refund policy in UK)

Sam said that I look fat in it and Serene said that I look old in it. Guess that's a NO in keeping the coat...

Will go and refund this weekend........:(

No sure how I'm going to adapt back to my hectic lifestyle when I'm back in S'pore working. I just had a 9 to 3 day today, and when I'm saying 9 to 3, I'm stretching it cos I did play a few games of 'Spider Solitaire' and went for an hour lunch, effectively......... I think I only worked at most 3 hours today.

Oh well, at least I got my work done now and the manager can review it next week. Been working from about 8.30 to 5 for a few days last month and took work back home too, thus this make up for the 'lazy' day today (trying to comfort myself for the 'lazy day' today).

So do we work to live or live to work???

Sunday, December 05, 2004

I'm Simpson overdosed!!! Eversince we got Skyone, Sam had been watching Simpson everyone from 6pm to 8pm. 4 episode everyday, that's 28 episode a week, about 112 episode a month. Too much Simpson!!!!! for me..... That why I sitting on here typing this... :(

Do you trust your best friend completely??
Do you heed their advice ever if that's not what you think??
Are they supportive of whatever you do (must be LEGAL!!) ever if your decision is different from theirs??
Do you tell them everything eventhough you think that will affect his/her relationship with someone else??

Prehaps, I'm don't.......

It rain rather heavily and it turned into snow!! I was out with my colleague and saw it snow..... lasted for about 90 minutes.

According to the news, it was not expected that Cambridgeshire would see the ground whitened so early. Snow fell in a line from east to west that stretched from Newmarket to Bedford.

Failed my driving test AGAIN!! What a failure I am.....

This time, my defence was that there were 2 examiners in the car, one was to assess the examiner assessing me. My instructor knew that I would had fail when both of them sat in my car cos my examiner will try to impress his examiner and pick on anything I do. Tough luck!!!

Going for 'retail therapy' this weekend to cheer myself up.....

Just had my first night driving lesson after so long. It's soooo scary driving in the dark!!! I'm going to FAIL this time!!! All my confidence GONE!!! :(

God bless me and everyone driving on the road when I'm on it!!

Don't go Amsterdam with 200 or 500 euro note cos NO shops/ restaurants in Amsterdam accept it (Not sure if it applies to the rest of Europe). Apparently, there is a notice on most shops that states that they don't accept 200 or 500 euro note.

We handed the 500 euro to the restaurant for our lunch which cos 66 euro and was told that they don't accept it. In the end, we decided to charge it to card and need not be told, no tips given!!

We were advised that we can change the 500 euro into smaller note by visiting the Holland Casino (near our Hotel) but we need to pay an entrance fee of 3.50 euro each. So we agreed that all of us will go in and try our luck to win back the entrance fee with 10 euro each.

Serene and I went to play jackpot and I won 50 euro!!! Sam and Junwen also won about 10 euro by playing blackjack so we did recover the cost and managed to change the 500 euro into smaller note.

Why did they have the 200 or 500 euro note in circulation when it's not 'recognised' as a legal tender??

BTW, 50 pound note is not used in United Kingdom even though you tend to get them through moneychanger overseas. You get a kind of 'stare' from the staff when you paid with 50 pound note but most of them still accepts it.

Went to London for shopping again!!!

When will I go London for sightseeing?? Guess when you live in the country long enough, you don't feel like a tourist.

Anyway, I had been to the following attractions :-
1. Changing of guards (eventhough I can't really see due to overcrowding on Sunday)
2. Harrods (if you consider it as an attraction)
3. Night view of Tower Bridge,
4. London Eye (had not ride on it yet)
5. Big Ben (saw it when we drove past, can count lar)
6. Soho (not really an attraction to me)
7. Watch theatre performance (Mama Mia)
8. Portobello Market
9. Camden Town Market

Come to think of it, I did cover quite a lot except for the museums and zoo which I'm not interested.

Next attraction to cover is the football match.

Sushi for lunch?? That's what I had for lunch today with my colleagues. They were giving me the 'what are you doing' look when I place the wasabi in the saucer of soya sauce and mixed them all up. Apparently, what they do is to spread a bit of wasabi on top of the sushi and then dip the sushi in the soya sauce.

Sounds the same to me, except that I was being efficient (or lazy, if you want to put it that way) and combined both together for easy dinning.

Thursday, October 28, 2004

Sam had got the Sony Ericsson S700!!! I like it cos the camera viewscreen is big+1.3 mega pixel, etc.... Overall I want one too but it a bit big as a lady's handphone. Anyway, I'll wait until Feb 05 to see what new handphone there is.
Going to London this weekend and will be sleeping over at Cheryl & Renee's place. Hope I don't spend too much (although I had my eyes on the Burberry bag alreadi!!)

Wednesday, October 20, 2004

My colleague (Liz) told me this :-

Her husband (Steve) had to go back office to work last Sat and they met in the afternoon to go shopping. While they were shopping, Steve got a call to go back office again. That was a weekend cut short.

Last night, Steve receive a bottle of wine as a thank you for your effort and coming back to work during weekend and Liz receive a bouquet of flower as a way of saying sorry for ruining the last weekend, all delivered to their home.

So thoughtful!!!

Guess you don't get that in Singapore...(sign)...

Had booked a weekend trip to Amsterdam for 6 Nov. The flight+hotel (2 nights)+half day tour+Chicago Boom = approx 210 pounds per person from Expendia.co.uk. Fairly cheap.

I'm not there for the pot but for the Van Gogh Museum.

Got back from our Italy trip.

2 days in Rome - Tiring but rewarding (Tired from walking)
1 day in Pisa - Relaxing (finally a little break for my feet from all the walking in Rome)
1 day in Milan - Disappointing (most of the shops closed on Sunday and I was there on Sunday!! The shopping is worse than London or Singapore!!)
2 days in Venice - Eye opener (The sceneries were far better than what I expected)

Friday, September 24, 2004

My colleague (Rosanna) mention to me about Black Country Living Museum located near Birmingham. The museum shows how people lived and worked around the 18th century to the present day. There is a gift shop, a real working pub, a restaurant and canal trips. A walk round the village takes you back in time.

Rosanna told me that you can change your pounds into old days shillings and use that to buy things within the Museum.

Interesting place.... Thinking of going???

Very rewarding (not from the sightseeing but from the shopping!!! Bought a lot of thing!!). & it make my day that I found the Burberry bag that I was looking for a long, long time!!! Costing £255!!!! When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar & the coffee !!!
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shooked the jar lightly. the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full, They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "Yes".
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things like your family, your children, your health, your friends, your favourite passion, things that if things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else, like the small stuff."
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued," there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups, Take your partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter, Set your priorities. the rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffe represented. The professor smiled," I' m glad you asked. It just goes to show that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend".

Very busy!!!

Busy planning our Italy trip. Had booked the ticket with Ryanair and it cost £3.99 per person to fly from London Stansted to Rome and 12.99 Euro per person from Venice back to London Stansted (excluding tax of approx. £15 per person each way), CHEAP!!! Now researching where to stay, train ticket/ timetable, place to visit, etc. Busy, busy, busy!!!

Also busy with cleaning the house and making space for Serene's stuff as she's coming on Fri (20/8). Lots to do, luckily Sam's away this coming Sunday to Tuesday for a meeting in Germany. I can concentrate on my housework and research :)

Sam fell off his bicycle when we were cycling from our place to his friend's place for BBQ on Friday nite.

He had a box of 20 glass bottled Stella Artois in his haversack and a bag of prawn crackers on his right hand. He was cycling with only 1 hand on the bicycle in order to keep the crackers away from the front wheel when he deciding to change the gear (wrong move!!!). Lost control and fell on the right but amazing because he wanted to protect the prawn cracker, he turn and used his left elbow to break his fell. Ouuuuch!!

I was cycling behind him all this while but managed to avoid him when I saw the fell. He still managed to stood up and had some bruises on his left elbow and left legs. Then he realise something leaking from his back... Oh shit, the Stella!!!

Open the bag and found that it was 'flooded'. A quick check shows that there were 18 remaining, not too bad to have 18 left. The bag of prawn crackers looks alright too.

There weren't any open wounds but I guess he definitely will have blue black (I'm talking about BIG ones). Walked back to our place and decided to drive to his friend's place cos he's not in the condition to cycle. He felt pain on his left elbow but thought it's normal. We decide to wait and see until Sat if there's a need to go A&E (no GP open on weekends).

Throughout the nite, he felt worst but dare not wake me up cos I'm suppose to have driving lesson at 8am that morning. What a sweet thing to do..... Finally we woke up at about 6.30am and he decide to go A&E before it gets too crowded. I drove him there with my 'L' sticker on and called my driving instructor to pick me up from the hospital (within Cambridge city) instead but no one answer the phone. By 8.30am, I gave up trying to call the instructor.

Sam's x-ray result shows that there was a crack in the bone but it will heal itself (takes up to 2 months) and was given a sling for resting his hand, no other medicine given. We should have enough painkillers at home for him thought.

Called BSM and was told that unless the instructor say otherwise, I would still have to paid for the 2 hours lesson cos I didn't inform them earlier. Double standard people!!! Talking about them makes my heart boils. Think twice about going back to BSM if I fail my test this Monday.

Will try to get a pic of Sam in his sling and post it if he let me to.

Tuesday, July 20, 2004

BSM called to say that my driving instructor can't work for the next 3 weeks, thus they got me a new instructor and new car - Astra (previously driving Corsa). Had my driving lesson on last Saturday and it was a NIGHTMARE!!! He makes me think that I'm a worthless piece of SHIT!!! Cried when I got home (yes... I'm a crybaby :<...)

Called BSM to say that I want a change of instructor but was told that it can't be change cos no other instructor fits my time schedule. So I'm struck with this instructor. Die lor, my driving test on 2 Aug, can't change test date, can't change instructor.. like that sure fail one!!!

George Eads, who plays Nick Stokes, and Jorja Fox, who plays Sara Sidle, were dismissed by CBS Thursday, the first day of scheduled filming on the show's fifth season. Both had three years left in their current contracts. But as actors often do, they held out for bigger pay increases.

Singapore new millionaires!!!

SIXTEEN Singaporeans will become instant millionaires - because of a will belonging to Mr Tan Tye who died in Jul 22, 1898 took 100 years to be executed.

This is because of an unusual will which stipulated that his estate can be distributed to his descendants only 21 years after the death of the last relative who was alive when he died. Another unusual condition: Only males are eligible beneficiaries.

Originally uploaded by abtmay.

I twist and turn the chain and it almost break into two. The thief could had got my bicycle...... But why didn't he stay longer and he could had walk away with it...

We were thinking that he could be cutting the chain yesterday and was scare off by the fire alarm going off at about 1am (fake alarm by someone breaking the red fire alarm glass).

This is my new bicycle which I bought after Sam couldn't fix my old old (no sure about the problem). I would be heartbroken if the thief did get to steal it, so today, I bought a new chain with security level of 10 (the highest) to detect anyone from stealing my bike. Hope no one will target my Bike again.

I can't believe it!! Each Gmail account was given 3 invitations today and the price of Gmail in Ebay fell sharply, with only about less than US$10 each. I felt sorry for the person who bought my Gmail yesterday for US$83, wrote a good feedback in ebay and even sent a thank you email to us.

As for the new 3 invitations, I don't think I'll sell them cos the prices are too low, not worth my effort.

Crawl out of my bed early in the morning to prepare for my driving lesson at 8am in the morning. Shouldn't had booked it so early but that was the only free slot available on most of the weekends. Waited in the carpark below but the instructor did not turn up (he's usually early)..... sensed that something was wrong!!! Called him up and he told me that he's not working this weekend and had told BSM three weeks ago about this!!!

I'm so mad about this cos Sunday should be a day to lay in bed until you decide to wake up!!!! and not to wake up to stand in the carpark for nothing. I'm so going to scold someone in BSM for this mistake on Monday!!

Anyway, since I woke up so early, I decided to wake my hubby up too (must share ups and downs together!!). We then washed the car and have our own driving lesson at the Science Park.

Thursday, May 27, 2004

Our precious car finally arrived!!

Sunday, May 23, 2004

Exciting day yesterday!! We bought a CAR!! It's a Nissan Primera GX, 1997, which cost 2200 pounds and Sam will pick up the car this Thursday. Meanwhile we are search for the lowest price for insurance/ breakdown cost. This is going to wipe out my bank account.

Today, I had my 2nd driving lesson and my instructor let me drive on the roads and dual carriageway. Scary and nervous.... ride.

One of my colleague was reading the accounting magazine and saw this ad for an Chief Executive. Seriously, they can't get any worse. To me they don't need a Chief Executive, they need a miracle.

The other colleague was saying that since it can't get any worse, might as well apply for the job, do a bit to improve or do nothing (since it can't get any worse), take the $$ (which is 125k pounds per annum) and leave after a year (before they fired you). Brilliant plan!!
Saw the news on the BBC website that 4 persons had been attacked in Cambridge in just 10 days and a cyclist is believe to be behind this late night knife attack.

After reading the news, I was so worried that I ban Sam from going out late at night (to office or to pub) cos the attack areas are close to our home.

Been to London for the weekend and I'm back broke!! The train fare to London increased, not to mention that I'm no longer qualify for young person railcard (under 26!!).

We finally got to see a musical show (Mama Mia) in London after staying in UK for these time. It was a great show but we felt that the ticket was a bit overpriced considered where we sat.

It's bank holiday again, no work on Monday, no PAY!!!

I'm a Close Compadre!

You really know how to connect with friends when you're one-on-one. Flitting from place to place isn't your style. Why waste time when you could be spending it with a good pal, or two, or three? Quaint cafés, old-school restaurants, the perfect bar stools at the corner bar — they're all great places for good food, fun, and conversation. Sure, there are times to fight the crowds at a sweltering party. But you'd probably rather spend time talking about the deeper issues in life and developing the kind of connections with friends that last a lifetime. After all, isn't that what friends like you are for?

Should we find you at a large party, we'd bet that you'd be the one chatting to someone on the couch or hitting the dance floor with your good friends. We'd also guess, though, that you'd prefer to be at a smaller gathering with your close crew of friends. Spending quality time with your clan is key for you whether that involves playing board games, talking until dawn, or just hanging out.

So what's YOUR Comfort Zone?
Been listening to 梁静茹 CD which I bought over to UK. Have grew to love this song 'Fly Away'.

I think that everyone has their own comfort zone, it just the difference in tolerance level.

My comfort zone ==== Low tolerance level and not receptive to changes.

I went for a Diversity training today and felt that the people here are better at airing their views and participating at discussions.

Why are we conscious about what we say?? Is it because we think that it can be used against us in future?? Better not to say something than to have said and regret it.

Is it their freedom of speech or are we 'Kiasu, Kiasi, Kia pai seh'??

Sam is working late today....I'm struck at home....Just sent an e-card to Naomi to wish her Happy Birthday and suddenly, I felt that I miss home!! I miss going home for dinner, going out shopping after work, shopping at Chinatown, Orchard Road, going through bargain racks......

I'm home-sick, I'm Singapore-sick.....
Was invited to my colleague's wedding reception which is to be held in May 04. She had a lovely wedding ceremony at Ice Hotel (Sweden) in Jan 04 and this reception was for all friends and families to attend. Knowing that there's no sure thing as 'hong bao' in UK, I asked her for the wedding list. She had arranged it from John Lewis and I can choose to buy online or at the store. The chosen gift will dedeucted from her list and will be send to her by John Lewis.

Personally, I think that the wedding list is great if you are moving into a new home and need these new items, or else, 'hong bao' is still the best. The joy of counting money$$, the world of an auditor!!

A question from my Theory Test Book :-

After dealing safely with the hazard sign (as per below), you should
a. check your tyre pressures
b. switch on your hazard warning lights
c. accelerate briskly
d. test your brakes

I only heard of 'Ford' car!! Don't even know what to do when I see the sign let alone AFTER dealing safely with the sign.

A quick check to the dictionary solved my problem and the answer to the above question is (d) . I bet there's no such sign in Singapore.
Eversince I'd been in UK, I have picked up some new 'English' word cos here they like to use cheeminology words. Sometimes, I have to rely on the Thesaurus in Word to find out what that word means or prehaps my English wasn't good enough to begin with!!

Just today I encounter this word on a report that I read, "Anecdotal" Wow!! What's this??

One word which is very commonly used in UK = Dodgy. Why can't they say 'suspicious'??

I'll always remember this one. Last summer, when I was watching the weather forecast on the news and the weathergirl said that the weather for today is going to be muggy. What the hell is muggy?? Can you imagine that in order to know the weather forecast for today, I need to look up the dictionary!!! Why can't they say that it's going to be HUMID!!!

Favorite quotes :

"People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost."

"If you love somebody, let them go. If they return, they were always yours. If they don't, they never were."

"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."

"Women always worry about the things that men forget; Men always worry about the things that women remember"

"Remember, people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions. You may have a heart of gold -- but so does a hard-boiled egg."

Searching the web regarding Ice Hotel in Sweden. One of my colleague had just tie the knot there and the pictures are lovely!!! It's an amazing place where the hotel has been re-built every year since 1989 and it's never more than six months old because in summer it melts and in winter they rebuild it all over again. In the bar, the drinks are served in cups made from ice!! Wonderful, that will keep the drink cold.

Get the hint Sam, I want to go there this winter!!

Had a lovely dinner at Loch Fyne with Sam last night to celebrate my birthday. Also ordered a bottle of white wine but I can't even finish a glass of it without feeling high. Sam did somehow manage to finish the whole bottle. Wow!!

Received my provisional driving licence and I had just gone to BSM to register for my theory test date which is on 17/4 (Sat). Wish me luck.

Happy Birthday to myself!!!

Birthdays got quieter each year for me, perhaps I'm so far away from my friends. Still can remember the present I got from friends and Sam on my birthday TEN years ago. We were 17, having a temp job, waiting for O' level results. Gosh, I miss those days!!

Isn't it amazing that you always wanted to grow up and live your dreams and when you have it all, you realized that it's not what you think it will be.

The first from the left is the goose egg, the second = duck eggs & the third is the small egg (forgot what egg it was!!)
Anyway, it's from my audit manager who has a farm and she has too much eggs cos it's the season (I guess).
We had the goose fried eggs yesterday, and it taste the same as the normal chicken eggs, no difference. As for the duck egg, I think they taste a bit more richer that chicken egg.

Whistle skirt

Just went to collect back my skirt today. No complain cos I got it back in 1 piece and with the tag off!! Hooray!! Just hope the weather would be fine for me to wear it in UK.

Friday, March 26, 2004

Just been to Manchester over the weekend to visit Junie. Saw a very pretty skirt at Whistles but was very pricey!! It cost £65 (after discount, usual price was about £95) which is about S$200!!! After trying it on, I knew that I must have it (I shouldn't had try it on)!!

But the good news for me was that Sam decided to buy it for me as a birthday gift (thumbs up for my husband). WOW!!!

IT was only back in Cambridge that I realise the security tag on the skirt was not taken off .<wanted to cry> Called the customer service the next day and was told to bring it to the Karen Millen store in Cambridge (there was no Whistles store in Cambridge & Karen Millen is the parent company) for them to take the tag off on Tuesday.

It turns out that the machine at Karen Millen is different and can't take off the tag so it had to be sent to HQ. Received a call on Thursday that the skirt had to be send to the Whistles store in Manchester cos only the machine there can take the tag off. Well, now I just hope that the skirt will not be lost somewhere during transport. <sign>

This should teach me a lesson to check everything that we bought.
